Diplomacy for growth, Europe and international crisis management. These are the three pillars of Italian foreign policy, as stated by Foreign Minister Emma Bonino at the press conference held at Palazzo Chigi, the Cabinet Office, at the end of the Council of Ministers meeting.

OUR INITIATIVES

2013 is the European Union’s “European Year of Citizens ”. Taking inspiration from this, a conference on “The European Union, European citizenship, European democracy: the position one year before the European elections in 2014” will take place on the morning of 30 May. The aim is to reflect on how best to ensure that European citizens can identify with the EU institutions.
The programme also includes a conference on “One for All, All for One: the public administration ‘system’”. This will examine progress made on dematerialisation (doing more with less) and workflow organisation using a single shared document management platform. Other initiatives include a “Cooperation Day”, focusing on health and social inclusion for people with disabilities in developing countries, and a seminar on the relationship between public officials and civil society.

A Europe of crises but also potential. That’s the message from the cover of the May edition of “Longitude”, edited by Pialuisa Bianco and now on sale. The two editorial features are “Death wish politics”, by the editor, and “Politics and the lessons of terror”, by Stefano Stefanini, Diplomatic Advisor to the Head of State. The “Widescreen” photo review is dedicated to Margaret Thatcher, who recently passed away, while the other cover feature analyses North Korea’s uneasy marriage of rearmament and extreme poverty.
