Schools and academic credentials

Do foreign diplomas or degrees retain their value in Italy?

In order to have foreign academic credentials recognised in Italy it is necessary to apply to the Dean of the University that has a curriculum comparable to the one completed abroad.
The required documentation includes:
a) original secondary school diploma (or certified copy) required for admission to the University in the country in which it was completed;
b) official translation and legalisation  of the diploma or certified copy referred to in letter a) above;
c) statement of the value of the diploma referred to in letter a) above, issued by the Italian diplomatic or consulate mission in the country to whose legislation the diploma complies;
c) original academic degree whose recognition is being requested, accompanied by an official translation in Italian and statement of value issued by the Italian diplomatic or consulate mission in the country with whose legislation the degree complies;
d) original certificate specifying in detail the courses and examinations completed abroad in order to obtain the academic degree referred to in letter c) above;
e) official translation of the certificate referred to in letter d) above;
f) study programmes on University letterhead or authenticated with the University’s stamp, of all the disciplines included in the foreign curriculum, accompanied by their translation into Italian. The authenticity of these programmes, as well as all the other documentation mentioned above, must be confirmed by the locally authorised diplomatic or consular mission;
g) generally, 2 passport-style photos, one of which has been authenticated.

The academic authorities can declare that the foreign academic degree is equivalent for all intents and purposes to the corresponding one issued by the Italian University, or else ensure partial recognition for individual examinations, with the consequent need for the person concerned to enrol in the Italian university in order to complete the exams and, if necessary, to prepare and discuss the final thesis. Recognition of foreign academic credentials takes place on the basis of specific cultural bilateral agreements or conventions with other countries.
