Identity Card

Do consular offices issue identity cards?
Yes, but for the moment only the Italian consular offices of the countries of the EU and those of Switzerland, Norway, the Principality of Monaco and San Marino.

Who can apply for an identity card at consular offices?
Italian citizens only:

  • duly registered in AIRE;
  • at least 15 years old;
  • who satisfy the requirements for obtaining an identity document for expatriation with validity equal to that of a passport (absence of criminal charges pending, consent of parents, etc.);
  • who do not already have another identity card.

Where can I apply for an identity card?
Only in the consular jurisdiction where you are a resident, or else in the offices of the municipality where you are registered in AIRE.

Can my identity card be issued the same day that I apply?
Unfortunately no, since the procedure requires an exchange of data with the municipality in which you are registered with AIRE.

Can I avoid having to go twice to the consular office by sending in my identity card application by mail?
Yes, but you would be best advised to follow the instructions of the consular office concerned (check the internet or call). In any case, it must always be picked up by the person who applied for whose identity has to be verified before the consular official can sign it.
