What is AIRE and who is it for?

AIRE is the official registry of Italian citizens residing abroad and each consulate has a division that deals with this service.

Do I need to be registered with AIRE?

Registration with AIRE is both a legal right and a duty for all citizens who have transferred their residence abroad. Registration is also required in order to take advantage of consulate services such as, for example, the issuance/renewal of passports and voting.

What do I need to register?

  • Registration is free of charge and the consular office must be supplied with the following documentation:
  • An ID document, even in the form of a photocopy; (identity card, passport, driving license, sailing license, pension card, license to operate heavy machinery, license to bear arms, any ID badge issued by an Italian ministry).
  • document attesting to residence in the consular jurisdiction, or self-certification of the same;
  • application form, available at diplomatic or consular representations abroad (see website of the individual mission concerned), duly filled out and signed.

I am already registered in AIRE but have changed my address. What do I need to do?

All address changes must be reported to the consular office.
This can be done in person, by letter, fax or e-mail, attaching a photocopy of your ID document and, where available, a photocopy of the document attesting to the address change issued by the local authorities.
