Born in Meta di Sorrento (Naples) on 19 December 1945, Giovan Battista Verderame is married with two children.
He obtained a degree in Law from the University of Naples in 1967 and a second degree in Politics, from the same University, in 1969.
He entered the diplomatic service in April 1970. At present he is the Director General for Resources and Innovation, with the rank of Ambassador.

- 1992-1993 Council of Ministers awards him the grade of Minister Plenipotentiary. Appointed Head of Office I, Directorate General for Political Affairs
- 1993-1994 Again on secondment, to the EEC Commission in Brussels, in the special role of Head of the Italian Commissioner’s private office
- 1994-1995 Head of Private Office of Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
- 1995-1996 Deputy Head of Foreign Minister’s Private Office
- 1996-1998 Deputy personal representative for the Inter-Governmental Conference for the Review of the Maastricht Treaty and Spokesperson for the Italian delegation. He then moved to the Directorate General for Political Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
- 1998-1999 Head of the Prime Minister’s Diplomatic Adviser’s Office
- 1999-2004 Italian Ambassador to Hungary, with ambassadorial credentials for the Republic of Moldova
- 2004-2007 Italian Ambassador to Algeria
- 2007-2010 Director General for the Countries of the Americas On 2 January 2009 the Council of Ministers awarded him the rank of Ambassador On 16 December 2010, after the organisational reform of the MFA, the Council of Ministers appointed him Director General for Resources and Innovation. This new structure deals with personnel management issues, budgetary affairs and technological innovation.
In 2008 he was made a Grand Officer of the Order of Merit of the Republic.
