Italian Educational Institutions Abroad

The network of Italian educational institutions abroad began to develop around the second half of the 19th century. Francesco Crispi is credited with having laid the legislative and organisational foundations for Italian schools abroad in 1889 which gave the Ministry of Foreign Affairs authority in this context.

The current educational network consists of 162 schools, 21 of which are State-run and 121 of which are the Italian departments of foreign, international and European schools, resulting in a total of 283 institutions in 46 countries. The overall enrolment for the academic year 2003-2004 was 30,955: 5,715 Italian students and 27,240 foreigners (70%). This was a slight increase over the 2000/2001 total of 30,365 (6,656 Italians and 23,709 foreigners).

The majority of these schools as of 2003/2004 were located in Europe (164), followed by the Americas (72), the Mediterranean and Middle East (28), Sub-Saharan Africa (17) and Asia and Oceania (2).
