G8 2009: The Italian Presidency and the inclusive approach

From 1 January to 31 December 2009 Italy holds the G8 Presidency. A distinguishing feature of the Presidency is the inclusive approach to emerging countries, developing countries and international organisations, the aim being to resolve new global challenges more effectively.

The Summit of Heads of State and Government took place in L’Aquila from 8 to 10 July, addressing the most significant policy issues on the international agenda. These include:

  • the commitment to make progress on the nuclear non-proliferation front
  • the situation in Iran and the Middle East
  • combating terrorism
  • the stabilisation of the Afghanistan-Pakistan region
  • the situation in North Korea
  • the response to the global economic-financial crisis
  • restoring citizens’ trust and boosting growth on sounder, balanced foundations, including by drawing up new, agreed rules
  • a focus on the social and employment dimension
  • combating protectionism and liberalising trade
  • food security and combating climate change.

The schedule also included ministerial meetings held throughout the year on specific issues such as foreign affairs, finance, trade, justice, security, the environment and employment. A meeting of Agricultural Ministers was held for the first time, to discuss the food security issues that emerged in all their gravity in 2008.
