Italy at the 2008 Zaragoza EXPO

06 June 2008

Italy is participating in the international EXPO to be held in Zaragoza from 14 June to 14 September 2008, the focus of which will be Water and Sustainable Development, a theme that also falls within the scope of the Millennium Goals and the more specific objectives of the UN-proclaimed Water for Life Decade (2005-2015).

Italy’s presence at the 208 Zaragoza EXPO is two-fold in aspect: historical–cultural, since Zaragoza was founded by the Roman Emperor Augustus in the year 23 B.C. and thus shares our culture and civilisation; and scientific–technological, in that is underscores our country’s sensitivity to a demanding, and at times tragic, contemporary theme that directly involves this primary element so indispensable to sustainable development.

As a result of its geographical position, multitude of coastal cities and age-old cult of water as an element vital in its artistic historical-cultural patrimony, Italy is a country for which water plays a predominant and omnipresent role.

The Zaragoza EXPO is aimed at inducing a common reflection on the problems of water in the contemporary world and on the role of water in situations of extreme scarcity or calamity. The Italian Pavilion presents a panorama of scientific, technological and engineering activities that foreground the role Italy is playing in all aspects of this sector: dams, canals, conduits, aqueducts, sewage treatment, desalination and purification.

The Italian regions participating in the event include CALABRIA, CAMPANIA, LAZIO, LOMBARDY, MOLISE, PIEMONTE, APUGLIA and VENETO.
