Labour G8: Italy to propose a ”social pact” at the G20. Prime Minister, governments must maintain social cohesion

31 March 2009
A “social pact”: this is what Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi intends to propose to the governments participating in the G20, and what the PM and Labour Minister Maurizio Sacconi announced in a press conference at the conclusion of the G8 meeting. “What it is”, Berlusconi underscored, “is a global pact to replace pessimism with optimism, mistrust with confidence, and to transform fear into hope”. Sacconi specified that the Labour G8 had resulted in clear indications for both the G8 and the G20. “First and foremost, for the role of the International Monetary Fund”, the Minister asserted, reiterating the need for governments to aim at incorporating social sustainability into the parameters of economic sustainability and that the G8 needs to aim at a social pact “capable of rebuilding a circle of trust”.
