Transnational Threats and Destabilising Factors is the theme of the conference to be held within the context of the Italian G8 presidency at the foreign ministry in Rome on Thursday 23 and Friday 24 April.
The conference will be opened by Interior Minister Roberto Maroni and closed by Minister Franco Frattini. It is intended as an occasion for reflection on how to effectively confront factors, such as terrorism, that contribute to domestic and international destabilisation. The Italian G8 presidency’s view is that a common analysis is needed of how these phenomena are interconnected and what political instruments could be enacted to impede them; and that an effective response requires greater synergy between national and international policies.
The conference will be divided into three sessions:
a) the first will confront the transnational implications of organised crime especially with regard to terrorist groups;
b) the second will concern social and economic destabilising factors, with special attention going to the implications of climate change;
c) the third session will deal with threats to peace and stability.
