“Afghanistan, why we are there”. Mission by the Minister's Special Envoy Ambassador Massimo Iannucci

26 October 2009

Minister Franco Frattini’s Special Envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan Ambassador Attilio Massimo Iannucci, Director General for the Countries of Asia and Oceania, is making a mission to Afghanistan with TG1 journalists Duilio Giammaria and Enrico Bellano, for the purpose of enhancing Italy’s overall cooperation and policy efforts in Afghanistan.

These efforts have made a large contribution to the country’s stabilisation and the reconstruction of the civilian, social and economic fabric, involving significant intervention by the Italian Cooperation and the Italian civil society in various sectors ranging from healthcare to education, institution-building, infrastructures and justice reforms that have been greatly appreciated by Afghan institutions and, especially, local populations. An Italian Cooperation Local Technical Unit is working in conjunction with the Embassy in Kabul, where Ambassador Iannucci visited some of the main Italian projects: the Esteqlal Hospital, the National Legal Training Center, the women’s prison and a correctional centre for minors.

Concentrated in the western region under Italian command, particularly in Herat, are the country’s main propsects for economic development, which could get a boost with the launch of large-scale infrastructure projects and support for alternative agriculture (to opium). An office of the Italian Cooperation is operating in Herat coordinating emergency project activities and working in connection with the Italian-led PRT.
