Afghanistan: Minister Frattini’s special envoy, Amb. Massimo Iannucci, on a mission to enhance Italy’s political and cooperation efforts

05 November 2009

To enhance Italian cooperation and political efforts was the goal of Minister Frattini’s Special Envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan and Director General for the Countries of Asia and Oceania Ambassador Attilio Iannucci’s mission, accompanied by TG1 journalists Duilio Giammaria and Enrico Bellano.

In Kabul, where an Italian Cooperation Local Technical Unit is working with the Embassy of Italy, Ambassador Iannucci visited several of the main Italian projects, including the Esteqlal Hospital, the National Legal Training Center, the women’s prison and the correctional centre for minors.

Italy’s contribution to the country’s stabilisation and the reconstruction of its civil, social and economic fabric has resulted in a series of successful interventions by the Italian Cooperation and the Italian civil society in various sectors ranging from healthcare to education, institution-building to infrastructure to the reform of the justice system, to the great appreciation of Afghan institutions and, above all, of the local population.

The country’s hopes for economic development are concentrated mainly in the Western Region, under Italian command, and particularly in Heart, and could be strengthened by the launch of major infrastructure projects and the encouragement and support aimed at the development of agricultural alternatives to opium. An Italian Cooperation office in Herat is coordinating the activities of emergency projects and working in connection with the Italian-led PRT.
