The Third Plenary Assembly’s main interest is to promote the Country System, with special regard for activities aimed at disseminating Italian language and culture around the world, as an essential instrument by which to reach out to Italian communities abroad. A strategic role in achieving that goal, asserted in the planning document to be approved by the Assembly, is played by communication and information.
The press and other new multimedia tools foster encounter and dialogue, encouraging democratic participation processes whose roots are to be found in recent tradition and that aim at new challenges, in the awareness of the complexity and richness of a rediscovered Italian identity. An identity that the Italian society incarnates and transmits even in this context of growing inter-dependence and globalization. In creating that strategy it is considered necessary to involve young people in foreign Italian communities and in the various regions, which began with the first conference of Young Italians in the World in December 2008, thereby fulfilling one of the more qualifying commitments underwritten at the Plenary Assembly of 2005.
The Assembly sessions, whose participants are to include 150 persons, including 32 young Italians sent by the CGIE and the regions, will be opened by Secretary of State Sen. Alfredo Mantica; Undersecretary to the Prime Minister the Hon. Gianni Letta will open the afternoon session and his address will follow that of Minister Franco Frattini. Vice President of the Conference of the Regions Sen. Angelo Michele Iorio will also be participating. The Conference’s task is to outline the planning approach for government, parliamentary and regional policies on Italians abroad, which is the political/administrative aim of the activities of the CGIE.
