Italy-Serbia: Terzi on a visit to Belgrade - Italian support in the EU

30 July 2012

Minister Giulio Terzi is in Belgrade today as the first member of an EU government to meet with the newly elected Serbian leaders. In a message following the inauguration of the new Serbian government, Terzi sent his own personal and the Italian government’s best wishes to Minister for Foreign Affairs Ivan Mrkic, expressing his certainty that beginning with the visit he would make today to Belgrade, that “it will be possible to work together with renewed intensity on further strengthening our countries’ strategic relations, fostering new growth opportunities under the aegis of common European values” within a framework of “prompt EU recognition”.

Crucial EU commitments in the coming months

In his message, Terzi recalled the “importance of Belgrade’s commitments over the upcoming months, ahead of the goal of setting the date for the launch of European Union accession negotiations”. In that regard Terzi assured his Serbian counterpart that “Italy intends to continue to support”, his country, “encouraging prompt EU recognition of the additional progress that Serbia has been able to make”, which, Terzi underscored, “plays a central role in the success of the Balkans’ European prospects, not least within the context of regional cooperation”.
