Italy welcomes the news that an agreement was reached in Tegucigalpa last night to bring an end to the political and institutional crisis triggered by the deposition of President Zelaya on 28 June 2009.
From the outset, our country closely followed the situation and kept in close, high level contact with all those involved in the difficult mediation effort. We also worked – including as part of the European Union’s common action – to foster a peaceful negotiated solution to restore Constitutional order in Honduras. A result that was finally achieved with the decisive contribution of the United States.
Italy hopes that, starting from this agreement, the conditions take shape not just for an effective national reconciliation effort in Honduras but also for the proper conduct of the elections scheduled for late November 2009. These elections would mark a definitive return to democratic normality for the Central American country.
