Italy becomes a member of the un LGBTI Core Group

Italy has recently become a member of the UN LGBIT Core Group, the group of Member States of the United Nations and social organisations that work for the protection and promotion of LGBTI (Lesbians, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual and Intersex) interests at global level. The group is chaired by Argentina and Holland, and currently includes Albania (which became a member at the same time as Italy), Australia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Croatia, El Salvador, France, Germany, Japan, Israel, Italy, Mexico, Montenegro, Norway, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Spain, the United States and Uruguay, in addition to the European Union, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Human Rights Watch and Outright Action International.

Our entry into the UN LGBTI Core Group gives recognition to Italy as a country long committed to the protection of LGBTI rights. Within the scope of the UN, Italy actively supported the first Declaration of the UN General Assembly on “human rights, sexual orientation and gender identity” in December 2008. In 2015, our country supported the UN-published report on best practices in this area, calling on all Member States to adopt concrete measures to end violence and discrimination. Italy also backed the adoption of the UN Human Rights Council of related resolutions in 2011, 2014 and 2016.
