Secretary Scotti met yesterday at the foreign ministry in Rome with the wife of the Republic of El Salvador and the government’s delegate on issues regarding social inclusion Vanda Giomar Pignato.

They reviewed topics pertinent to Italy’s traditional and substantial development cooperation activities in that country, including the recent prompt response to the passage of hurricane Ida, a particularly dramatic event for the number of victims and material damage it caused. In the wake of that emergency, and through the International Federation of Red Cross Societies, Italy immediately earmarked a contribution of 95,000 euro for emergency supplies to aid 1,500 families and is about to respond affirmatively to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) “Flash Appeal 2009” with an additional contribution of 200,000 euro. Communication apparatus and computers are also being provided to El Salvador’s civil defence department.

They also examined a one million euro emergency initiative under way that, with the contribution of the Italian NGOs present in the country, aims to intervene in the sectors of social services, healthcare and the risk of natural disasters.

Secretary Scotti assured his Salvadoran colleague that his country will remain a priority for Italy’s official development assistance interventions, and reiterated Italy’s willingness to intervene by means of assistance loans for between 8 and 10 million euro.

El Salvador’s Primera Dama thanked the Italian government for both the special emergency assistance provided and also regarding ordinary programmes, which, based on the positive experience already gained, asserted her special interest in exploring further possibilities for cooperation, above all in support of the non-separate education of disadvantaged and disabled children, a sector that the Italian Cooperation intends to contribute to support financially.

In conclusion Secretary Scotti recalled the imminent 4th National Italy-Latin America and Caribbean Conference to be held in Milan on 2 and 3 December, noting with pleasure the planned participation also of El Salvador’s foreign minister Martinez.
