Undersecretary Di Stefano meets with the UN Under-Secretary-General and Special Adviser of the Secretary-General on the Prevention of Genocide, Adama Dieng.

Today at the Farnesina, the Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Manlio Di Stefano, received the UN Under-Secretary-General and Special Adviser of the Secretary-General on the Prevention of Genocide, Adama Dieng, who illustrated the priorities of his mandate, also making reference to the UN’s new global strategy to bolster actions to combat hate speech.

Di Stefano reaffirmed that the protection and promotion of human rights are a priority in Italian foreign policy, also in the light of the social policies enacted by the Government. He said: “Italy is aware of the need for a continuous effort through education, cross-cultural dialogue and the adoption of ad hoc laws through which to tackle the social malaise that often generates a climate of tension.” The Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs then went on to recall that, in this perspective, our country closely cooperates with the United Nations system, also within the framework of our seat on the UN Human Rights Council for 2019-2021. Dieng expressed great appreciation and gratitude for Italy’s role in supporting his mandate and, more in general, in promoting and protecting human rights.
