Election of the members of the European Parliament 2019

Election of the members of the European Parliament 2019

Are you an Italian citizen living in one of the Member Countries of the European Union?

At the elections to renew the European Parliament, which are scheduled to be held in all the European Union Member Countries in the period between Thursday 23 May and Sunday 26 May 2019, the Italian citizens residing in any of the EU Countries can choose to vote for the representatives of the Country in which they reside or, alternatively, for Italian representatives.

The Italian citizens who are temporarily in a European Union Member Country to study or work, as well as the family members who form part of the same household, may vote for the Italian representatives if they file a specific request, addressed to the Mayor of the Municipality with which they are registered to vote, at the competent Consular office by and no later than 7 March 2019.

Italian citizens registered with the AIRE (Register of Italians Residing Abroad) who permanently reside in a European Union Member Country and who have not opted to vote for local candidates, shall be allowed to vote for Italian candidates without having to file any declaration of sorts.

Italian voters who are temporarily in a European Union Member Country to study or work can vote for Italian representatives at the polling stations set up at Italian Embassies and Consulates.

The people falling in the categories listed above shall receive the ballot paper from the Italian Ministry of the Interior at their home, with the indication of the polling station at which to vote, as well as the date and time of voting. In case you do not receive the ballot paper, you can go to the competent Consular Office to verify your status and eventually ask for another ballot paper.

Instead, those who wish to vote in Italy, even if they reside in a European Union Member Country, must file a request with the Mayor of the Italian Municipality in which they are registered to vote by the day prior to the election day in Italy.

Double voting is punished as a criminal offence:

- those who vote for the candidates for the European Parliament from the Country of residence cannot vote for Italian candidates and vice versa;

- those who vote for Italian candidates at polling stations set up at diplomatic and consular offices abroad cannot vote at the polling stations in Italy, and vice versa.

No one is allowed to vote more than once at the same round of elections:

Voters with multiple nationalities of European Union Member States may exercise their right to vote for the candidates of only one of the EU Member States of which they are nationals.

Are you an Italian citizen residing in a Country that is not a member of the European Union?

Italian citizens residing in Countries that are not a member of the European Union can vote for the Italian candidates for the European Parliament at the Italian Municipality with which they are registered to vote in Italy. To this end, they will receive an ad hoc notice from the Ministry of the Interior by the twentieth day after the publication of the Italian general election calling notice.
