Press release detail

“The latest news from non-government sources that Sakineh Ashtiani is in imminent danger of her life has struck us deeply. The commitment, not only of Italy’s government but of its parliament and people as well, to abolishing the death penalty wherever and against whomever it is pronounced, as a punishment that damages human dignity, is well known. Nevertheless we wish to reiterate it today with renewed force, and are confident we will be heard by the authorities of Iran, which Italy recognises as a sovereign state and with which it intends to maintain a constructive dialogue. Our appeal is not against Iran but for the life of Sakineh, as we have demonstrated since the start of our campaign. Iran’s positive acknowledgement of our sensibilities would help that mutual trust that Italy is seeking to restore with Iran despite the difficult international moment”.
