Renato Varriale

Ambassador Renato Varriale

Born in Naples (NA) on 10 September 1958.

Graduated in Law from the University “Federico II” of Naples in 1981.

He entered the diplomatic service in 1984 and was appointed Consul in Belo Horizonte in 1986.

From 1990 to 1994 he served as Head of the Economic and Commercial Office at the Italian Embassy in Cuba.

Back at the Ministry, he was assigned to the Directorate General for Personnel from 1994 to 1997. He later served in Tehran as First Counsellor and Deputy Head of Mission until 2000.

From 2000 to 2004 he was Counsellor and then First Counsellor and Deputy Head of Mission at the Permanent Representation to the OSCE in Vienna.

After returning to the Ministry, he served at the Directorate General for Personnel, first as Head of the Office for Internal and External Assignments, and from 2007 to 2011 as Deputy Director General.

From 2011 to 2015 he was Italian Ambassador in Lisbon. After returning to the Ministry, he was assigned to the Directorate General for Development Cooperation, and in 2016 he was appointed Inspector General of the Ministry and Offices Abroad and Head of the Ministry’s Unit for the Prevention of Corruption.

He was promoted to the rank of Ambassador on 2 January 2019. He has been Director General for Resources and Innovation since 15 January 2019.

He is a Commander of the Order of Merit of the Republic.

He is fluent in English, Portuguese, German, Spanish and French. His interests include history and hiking.

Ambassador Varriale is married to Rosaria Forgione and has a son.
