The Secretary General

Riccardo GUARIGLIA

SG Riccardo Guariglia

Born in Chicago (United States) on 29 March 1961 from a Neapolitan family.

University of Rome: he graduated with honours in Economics and Commerce on 21 July 1983; following a competitive examination he began his diplomatic career on 1 February 1985.

During his career, he has been:

– at the Institutional Press and Communication Service of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in Rome (1985 – 1989).

– First Secretary at the Italian Embassy in Cairo (1989 – 1992); Consul in Brussels (1992 – 1996).

– Counsellor at the Directorate General for Political Affairs of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Rome), serving as Deputy Head of the Balkans Department (1996 – 2000).

– First Counsellor at the Permanent Representation to NATO in Brussels (2000 – 2004), where he was responsible for managing operations, Balkan crises and the Mediterranean dialogue; Minister Counsellor at the Italian Embassy in Brasilia (2004 – 2008).

– Deputy Director General for the European Union/Central Director for European Countries, Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Rome (2008 – 2011).

– Ambassador of Italy in Warsaw (2011 – 2014).

– Head of the Diplomatic Protocol of the Republic (Rome, 2014 – 2018). He was designated Ambassador on 2 January 2018 and Head of the Cabinet of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Enzo Moavero Milanesi, from June 2018 to September 2019, for his entire government mandate.

– Ambassador of Italy to Spain and Andorra (2020-2023).

– Secretary General of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation from 6 March 2023.

He is married and has three children.

He was awarded the honours of Knight of the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic (2021) and the Order of the Star of Italy (2018), as well as several other honours from foreign countries.
