The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Luigi Di Maio, met today, in Rome, with the President of the Republic of Iraq, Barham Salih, who has travelled to Italy for institutional meetings. Their talk was an opportunity to exchange points of view on the principal bilateral dossiers and on the latest developments in the region.
Minister Di Maio stressed the solid friendship between the two Countries, founded on constant political dialogue and on profound cultural and commercial relations, which should be further strengthened to promote shared economic interests. Mr. Di Maio also expressed his hopes for the swift stabilisation of the security situation, observing that “the stability, development and well-being of Iraq are a priority for Italy. We have always been close to the Iraqi people at the most difficult times and remain close to you in this phase of stabilisation and reconstruction”.
The Minister also emphasised that “Italy is, and remains, among the most committed supporters of Iraq’s struggle against Daesh and of the strengthening of the Iraqi security forces”.
