Assistance in the search for compatriots

Modulo di richiesta informazioni

(Information request form)

(Reference Office: D.G.IT. – DESKS II and IV)

Information concerning Italian citizens abroad can be provided in compliance with current legislation on the protection of personal data (Legislative Decree 196/ 2003 and EU Reg. 2016/679), which in most cases requires the consent of the person sought. Bearing in mind that not all Italian citizens who have emigrated abroad have registered with Italian consular offices, if the person sought is identified, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation shall inform them of the terms of the request and the applicant’s contact details.

Consular Offices will carry out searches for which the applicant has demonstrated a legitimate interest, within the limits of the means permitted by local legislation and what mentioned above. Requests should be addressed directly by e-mail to the competent consular office by means of a reasoned handwritten request (on plain paper), enclosing a copy of a valid identity document of the applicant.

In case of disappearance, a report shall be filed with the competent police authorities. A copy of this report (possibly in pdf format) shall be sent to the territorially competent consular office and, for information, to Desk IV of the General Directorate for Italians Abroad and Migration Policies (dgit-4@esteri.it). Only in the event that the competent consular office cannot be identified, requests may be addressed to the aforementioned office.

With regard to requests to know the address of residence abroad of compatriots, also for notification purposes, please note that they shall be addressed to the relevant Italian municipalities of AIRE registration (municipality of last residence in Italy or municipality of origin). The registry offices of Italian nationals residing abroad (AIRE) are, in fact, held at the Municipalities and at the Interior Ministry (Article 1, paragraph 1, Law No. 470/1988).
