Cancellation from the Public Register of Motor Vehicles (PRA)

Pursuant to the provisions of the amended Article 103 of the Highway Code, as from January 1, 2020, in order to permanently export a vehicle abroad you shall first apply for its cancellation from the Public Register of Motor Vehicles (PRA).

Once cancelled, the motor vehicle can circulate to reach the border crossings for export only if you have a special permit and a temporary plate.

Therefore, in order to request the cancellation from PRA of the motor vehicles exported as from January 1, 2020, Italian citizens can no longer apply to the Consular Offices in the country to which they permanently export the motor vehicle.

Conversely, requests for cancellation from PRA of the motor vehicles exported by December 31, 2019 and re-registered in 2020 continue to be accepted by the Consular Offices according to the regulations in force until March 31, 2021, provided that the motor vehicles were re-registered with foreign plates at the time of the request for cancellation. To this end, the applicant shall attach a copy of the foreign registration certificate and any documents that, directly or indirectly, prove that the motor vehicle was exported abroad by December 31, 2019.
