The public service will be provided in the Library\u2019s Reading Room starting on March 9, 2026: eight workstations will be available.<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>Please carefully review the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Regolamento-provvisorio-Sala-studio.pdf\">provisional regulations<\/a> attached. <\/strong><strong>To access the Library\u2019s Reading Room, follow the same access procedures through the Pass Office, Olympic Stadium side, as for the Archives\u2019 Study Room.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Please note that access to the Diplomatic Historical Archives is subject to registration on the Archives portal, to subsequent authorization, and reservation of a place. Without the reservation of a place access will not be possible. It is therefore recommended to schedule your visit(s) well in advance.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>At the Historical Diplomatic Archives users can:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>consult documents:<\/strong>\u00a0the Archives make a Reading Room available to users where they can consult documentation and carry out research. A microfilm reader is also available.<\/li>\n<li><strong>reproduce documents with personal devices:<\/strong> upon prior request via the <a href=\"https:\/\/asd.esteri.it\/\">Portal<\/a>, photo- reproduction of documents (to be carried out with personal devices) is authorised. A copy of the documents reproduced shall be delivered to the Archives by means of a CD, DVD or USB memory key.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Before starting an archival search, please consult the published series of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esteri.it\/en\/uapsds\/documenti_diplomatici\/\">Italian Diplomatic Documents<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>ARCHIVES\u2019 PORTAL<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In order to access the services of the Reading Room of the Historical Diplomatic Archives, users <a href=\"https:\/\/asd.esteri.it\/\"><strong>need to register on the dedicated Portal<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Through the Portal users can:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>request authorisation for consultation;<\/li>\n<li>reserve a seat in the Reading Room;<\/li>\n<li>request documentation;<\/li>\n<li>request authorisation for digital reproduction.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<header class=\"entry-header\">\n<header class=\"entry-header\">Users are urged to carefully read and scrupulously follow the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Regolamento-rivisto-21-marzo-2024.docx\">Reading Room Regulations<\/a>\u201d and the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/garrante_-_regole_deontologiche_per_archiviazione_nel_pubblico_interesse_e_ricecrca_storica_dov._web_9069661_del_19_dicembre_2018.pdf\">Rules of Ethics for Archiving in the Public Interest and Historical Research<\/a>\u201d.<br \/>\nPlease note that the Reading Room of the Historical Diplomatic Archives is located in the Palazzo della Farnesina: appropriate clothing is therefore necessary.<\/header>\n<header><\/header>\n<header><\/header>\n<header><\/header>\n<header><\/header>\n<header class=\"entry-header\"><strong>Rules for consultation<\/strong><\/header>\n<header class=\"entry-header\">Documents that go back over 50 years ago are available for consultation. With a special procedure, i.e. with the opinion of the Office producing the documents, it is also possible to consult documents dating back to the period between 30 and 50 years ago (see Ministerial Decree No. 1012\/BIS\/712 of 22 December 2015): in this case, users shall wait for the relevant preparation time.<\/header>\n<header><\/header>\n<header class=\"entry-header\">Please note that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the documents containing specific categories of sensitive data (Article 221 of Law No. 675 of 31 December 1996 and Articles 8 and 9 of Legislative Decree No. 281 of 30 July, 1999) can be consulted only after 70 years;<\/li>\n<li><strong>the fonds that are not ordered or have no sufficient means of identification, as well as documents of very high value or that have conservation problems, are excluded from consultation.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>PLEASE NOTE!<\/u><\/strong> In order to access and consult any document, you need to complete the following essential steps on the Portal <strong>1) register; 2) complete and submit your search request; 3) book your visit dates; 4) book the documents to consult<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>For obtaining information and assistance on the procedures to register, reserve seats in the Reading Room and request archival material, please follow the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.esteri.it\/ArchivioStoricoDiplomatico\/tutorial\/default.aspx\"><strong>tutorials<\/strong> <\/a>and read <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esteri.it\/en\/?page_id=114426\"><strong>FAQ<\/strong> <\/a>carefully.<\/p>\n<\/header>\n<p><strong>Documents needed for registration on the Portal<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When <a href=\"https:\/\/web.esteri.it\/archiviostoricodiplomatico\/\">registering<\/a>, users shall attach the following documents (in pdf format, file name max. 40 characters, file size max. 300 Kb):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>ID document<\/li>\n<li>presentation letter by the University Professor or the institution commissioning the research;<\/li>\n<li>for non-EU nationals: verbal note of the competent Diplomatic Mission indicating the research subject (the research will be allowed if reciprocity is provided).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>By signing the application for registration and admission to the Archives, users agree to the digital treatment of their personal data.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>How to request post-1948 archival material <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Before proceeding to request post-1948 documentation though the Portal, users of the Reading Room are required to communicate by e-mail the list of envelopes they wish to consult (archiviostorico@esteri.it).<br \/>\nOnce the Archives have carried out the necessary checks, they will inform users of the consultation schedule.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Opening hours<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From Monday to Friday, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>There will be a summer break (August) and during the Christmas and Easter holidays.<\/p>\n<p>The Sala studio will be closed to the public on April 3rd and 7th.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>CONTACTS<\/strong><br \/>\nTelephone : 06\/3691 + one of the following extensions: 3213, 3295, 3035, 3235.<br \/>\nEmail: <a href=\"mailto:archiviostorico@esteri.it\">archiviostorico@esteri.it<\/a><br \/>\nDirector of the Historical Diplomatic Archive: Dott.ssa Paola Busonero<\/p>\n<p><strong>HOW TO GET TO THE ARCHIVES<\/strong><br \/>\nAddress:<br \/>\nHistorical-Diplomatic Archives<br \/>\nAnalysis, Planning, Statistics and Historical Documentation Unit<br \/>\nDirectorate General for Public and Cultural Diplomacy<br \/>\nMinistry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation<br \/>\nPiazzale della Farnesina 1<br \/>\nI-00135 Rome<\/p>\n<p>Public transport:<br \/>\nUnderground: Line A (red) Ottaviano stop + bus line 32 direction Farnesina.
