It includes sectors such as renewable energy, electric mobility and the circular economy.

Today, cleantech is one of the main drivers of global industrial development: it fosters innovation and value creation in a context of limited resources and increasingly stringent regulation, while also contributing to energy security in an increasingly complex geopolitical environment.

Overview of the Italian market and the role of MAECI

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), international trade in green technologies is expected to grow rapidly, reaching an estimated value of USD 575 billion by 2035, more than 50% above the current global market for natural gas.

In Italy, public support and NRRP investments are accelerating the development of the sector, building on the country’s strong manufacturing tradition and expertise in advanced materials and electrification. Italy stands out at European level, particularly in the field of building-integrated renewables, with a strong position in photovoltaics and component manufacturing.

There are also encouraging signs on the private investment front: in the third quarter of 2025, venture capital in the cleantech sector rose sharply, more than doubling compared with the previous quarter and bringing the annual total to EUR 149.5 million.

Italian cleantech is therefore a tangible driver of economic growth, skilled employment and industrial resilience, helping to strengthen Italy’s role in the new phase of global competition.

In this context, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation plays a central role in supporting the internationalisation of highly innovative Italian companies and in strengthening the country’s position within strategic global value chains.

Within the Directorate General for Growth and Export Promotion, Office IV (Promotion of Innovative Industrial Supply Chains and Startups) acts as a point of connection between the national innovation ecosystem, the diplomatic network and foreign markets, supporting startups and SMEs in enhancing their technological and industrial capabilities.

Through economic promotion activities, strategic partnerships, investment attraction and dialogue with international public and private stakeholders, the Office helps turn Italian innovation into a concrete driver of competitiveness, sustainable growth and Italy’s qualified presence in global green and digital transition processes.

Last updated: January 2026

Cleantech refers to the range of technologies, processes and solutions designed to reduce environmental impact, improve energy efficiency and accelerate the transition to a low-emission economy.
