{"id":46101,"date":"2021-10-25T16:35:33","date_gmt":"2021-10-25T14:35:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.esteri.it\/?page_id=46101"},"modified":"2026-04-23T14:17:04","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T12:17:04","slug":"carta_identita","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-opportunita\/italiani-all-estero\/documenti_di_viaggio\/carta_identita\/","title":{"rendered":"Identity card"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esteri.it\/en\/ministero\/sportello_info\/domandefrequenti\/faqrichiestainfo\/\">Online Inquiries<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Electronic identity card (EIC)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>(Reference Office:\u00a0<\/strong><strong>D.G.IT<\/strong><strong>. \u2013 DESK II)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The electronic identity card (EIC) is issued by all Consular Offices in the European Union\u2019s Member States and in 115 Consular Offices in non-EU countries, for a total of 150 Consular Offices.<strong> \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>REQUIREMENTS\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The EIC may only be issued to Italian citizens regularly residing in the consular district of each Consulate, who are already entered into the consular register, and whose personal data are already present in the database of the Register of Italians living abroad (A.I.R.E.) of the Interior Ministry (National Register of the Resident Population \u2013 ANPR).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">For the EIC to be issued,<b>\u00a0a validated tax code\u00a0<\/b>is also required<b>.\u00a0<\/b>Otherwise, the tax code shall be attributed or validated by the Inland Revenue Agency through the Consular Office prior to the issuance of the EIC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><b><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><b><span lang=\"EN-US\">1.Validity<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The validity of the identity card varies depending on the holder\u2019s age:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">3 years for minors under 3 years of age;<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">5 years for minors between 3 and 18 years of age;<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">10 years for adults.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><b><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><b><span lang=\"EN-US\">2. Application procedure<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The application for an electronic identity card shall be submitted using the Booking Online platform or any different channel made available by the relevant consular office and available on its website.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">At least 15 days shall elapse from the moment when the application is submitted to the date set for the appointment, which is necessary to enable the consular office to check the applicant\u2019s personal details, correct any mismatch and check that there are no causes that prevent the document from being issued.<\/span><b><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><b><span lang=\"EN-US\">Please note that registration with A.I.R.E. is a prerequisite for the purposes of submitting the application for the EIC to be issued. In the case of Italian citizens born abroad, it is also essential that the relative birth certificate has already been registered with the Civil Status Registry of the Municipality of reference.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><b><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><b><span lang=\"EN-US\">3. Appointment and documents to be submitted<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">When showing up at the appointment, the citizen shall provide the following\u00a0<b>documents<\/b>:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">1 passport photo, in accordance with ICAO regulations;<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">identity document in accordance with Presidential Decree 445\/2000. If the applicant has no identity document, he \/ she shall be accompanied by two witnesses;<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">an affidavit from both parents if the applicant is under the age of 18<br \/>\n<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esteri.it\/mae\/resource\/doc\/2019\/09\/form1_-_atto_di_assenso_in_favore_dei_figli_minori.docx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">atto di assenso di entrambi genitori\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">At the time of the appointment, the consular officer\u00a0<b>shall take the applicant\u2019s photo and, except for minors under 12 years of age, the fingerprints, and the signature,<\/b>\u00a0which shall be securely recorded inside his \/ her EIC microchip and not stored in any other place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><b><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><b><span lang=\"EN-US\">4. Cost<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The cost for issuing the document is:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><b>21.95<\/b>\u00a0euros, in case of first issuance or renewal;<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><b>27.11<\/b>\u00a0euros, in case of a duplicate due to theft or loss.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Payment shall be made on the day of the appointment, in accordance with the procedures established by the consular office of reference.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><b><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><b><span lang=\"EN-US\">5. Delivery of the identity card<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The\u00a0<i>Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato<\/i>\u00a0shall print and then deliver the EIC by post to the address of residence (or delivery address) provided by the applicant, within 15 days from the date of the application submitted to the Consulate. Delivery times may vary depending on the country of destination.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">In the event of non-delivery due to an incorrect address, the parcel is held at the local post office for collection for the required period of time, at the end of which it is returned to the relevant Consular Office for attempting a further delivery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><b><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><b><span lang=\"EN-US\">6.
