{"id":46411,"date":"2021-07-19T10:46:55","date_gmt":"2021-07-19T08:46:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.esteri.it\/politica-estera-e-cooperazione-alla-sviluppo\/aree_geografiche\/africa\/corno-dafrica\/"},"modified":"2025-12-16T12:15:38","modified_gmt":"2025-12-16T11:15:38","slug":"corno-dafrica","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.esteri.it\/en\/politica-estera-e-cooperazione-allo-sviluppo\/aree_geografiche\/africa\/corno-dafrica\/","title":{"rendered":"The Horn of Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>Horn of Africa<\/strong> represents an area of <strong>prominent strategic interest for Italy<\/strong> within the broader Red Sea region, where our Country plays a <strong>leading role<\/strong> in maintaining peace and stability, in line with <strong>long-standing friendly relations and with a traditional and multifaceted commitment.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The region continues to be marked by <strong>strong tensions<\/strong>, both within individual countries and between states, which keep it in a <strong>worrying state of instability<\/strong> and exacerbate challenges related to food insecurity, access to services, and the effects of climate change on communities.<\/p>\n<p>The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has launched numerous collaborations in the <strong>political<\/strong>, <strong>security<\/strong>, <strong>economic<\/strong>, <strong>social<\/strong>, <strong>cultural<\/strong> and <strong>development cooperation<\/strong> fields, and on issues such as <strong>poverty reduction <\/strong>and support for <strong>regional integration<\/strong> processes, both bilaterally and within the European Union. Italy\u2019s financial contribution to initiatives supported by <strong>United Nations Agencies<\/strong>, aimed at improving living conditions in the most vulnerable areas, is also significant.<\/p>\n<p>Two regional organizations are headquartered in the Horn of Africa: the<strong> African Union<\/strong> (AU) and the <strong>Intergovernmental Authority on Development<\/strong> (IGAD). At the multilateral level, Italy has accredited its own Permanent Representative to the African Union as an observer, and holds the role of co-chair of the IGAD Partners Forum (IPF), which brings together the organization\u2019s donors.<\/p>\n<p>Confirming the prominent role the Italian Government attributes to the Horn of Africa, two countries in the region\u2014<strong>Ethiopia and Kenya<\/strong>\u2014were identified from the outset as <strong>pilot Countries of the Mattei Plan<\/strong>, the partnership program with the African continent launched in Rome in January 2024 at the first Italy\u2013Africa Summit.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, within the framework of <strong>Italy\u2019s 2024 G7 Presidency<\/strong>, significant attention was devoted to Africa, with particular focus on strengthening peace, stability and growth on the continent, and on deepening <strong>synergies between the Italian strategy and the EU Global Gateway<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Horn of Africa represents an area of prominent strategic interest for Italy within the broader Red Sea region, where our Country plays a leading role in maintaining peace and stability, in line with long-standing friendly relations and with a traditional and multifaceted commitment.
