\nThe future of the Mediterranean after the pandemic
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The sixth edition of the\u00a0Rome MED \u2013 Mediterranean Dialogues<\/strong>\u00a0Conference, promoted since 2015 by the\u00a0Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation\u00a0and by ISPI, the Italian Institute for International Political Studies, will be held in digital format this year, and will include more than 40 virtual events,\u00a0from 25 November to 4 December 2020.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Conference will open on\u00a0Wednesday 25 November\u00a0<\/strong>when\u00a0Luigi Di Maio,\u00a0<\/strong>Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and\u00a0Giampiero Massolo,<\/strong>\u00a0President of ISPI, will open proceedings on the web platform.\u00a0 The\u00a0MED-Dialogues<\/strong>\u00a0will be closed on\u00a0Friday 4 December<\/strong>, by the Italian Prime Minister,\u00a0Giuseppe Conte<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Those taking part in the Conference will include exponents from major international organisations, academics, and entrepreneurs, as well as students and experts from around the world, and will include\u00a0more than 40\u00a0political<\/strong>\u00a0leaders<\/strong>\u00a0in the form of Presidents, Prime Ministers, and Ministers from various international bodies. Those taking part will include:\u00a0Sergey Viktorovich Lavrov<\/strong>, Russian Foreign Affairs Minister;\u00a0\u00a0Paolo Gentiloni,<\/strong>\u00a0European Commissioner for Economic and Financial Affairs;\u00a0\u00a0Ylva Johansson<\/strong>, European Commissioner for Home Affairs;\u00a0Mohammad Javad Zarif<\/strong>, Iranian Foreign Affairs Minister; Prince\u00a0Faisal Bin Farhan Al Saud,<\/strong>\u00a0Saudi Arabian Foreign Affairs Minister;\u00a0Subrahmanyam Jaishankar<\/strong>, Indian Foreign Affairs Minister;\u00a0Ahmed Maitig,\u00a0<\/strong>Libya\u2019s Vice-President of the Presidential Council, GNA;\u00a0Ayman Safadi<\/strong>, Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriots;\u00a0Riyad al Malki<\/strong>, Palestinian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriots;\u00a0Othman Jerandi<\/strong>, Tunisian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migrations, and Tunisians Abroad;\u00a0Anwar Gargash<\/strong>, United Arab Emirates State Minister of Foreign Affairs;\u00a0\u00a0Nickolay Mladenov<\/strong>, UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process;\u00a0J\u00e1n Kubi\u0161<\/strong>, UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon; and\u00a0Mohammad Sanusi Barkindo<\/strong>, OPEC Secretary General.<\/p>\n

Albeit in a time of pandemic,\u00a0MED Dialogues 2020<\/strong>\u00a0intends to draw up a \u201cpositive agenda\u201d for the Mediterranean, putting together possible shared solutions to health, economic, and political risks that could prove to be more serious and destructive than in the rest of the world. The strategic questions on which the debate will centre include the main security challenges, the difficulty in dealing with the migratory phenomenon during the pandemic, the destiny of the younger generations, the revolution in the energy market, the opportunities offered by the transition to a green, sustainable economy, the strategic role of women in the Mediterranean area, and their contribution to social and economic growth. One undoubted strategic matter for the Mediterranean area is also a reflection of the Euro-Mediterranean partnership, on NATO\u2019s role, as well as strategies in relation to Countries such as the United States, the Gulf Nations, Russia, China, India, and Japan.<\/p>\n

In recent months 28 meetings were organised, in digital mode, with very high level international figures, to discuss the situation in key countries in the area, such as Syria, Libya, Israel, Palestine, Yemen, and Iran, in order to add to the contributions of ideas and proposals. The debate will also centre on other strategic questions such as Europe\u2019s role, green energy, and migrations, among others.<\/p>\n
