At the request of the person concerned, the diplomatic-consular Representation may:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; pay a visit to the detainee;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; provide names of lawyers of reference on the spot;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; take care of contacts with family members, subject to the express consent of the detainee;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; ensure medical assistance and comfort supplies to the detainee, where necessary and permitted by local regulations;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; facilitate the transfer to Italy, if the compatriot is detained in countries adhering to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coe.int\/it\/web\/conventions\/full-list\/-\/conventions\/treaty\/112\/signatures?p_auth=PEqwslGJ\">Convenzione di Strasburgo sul trasferimento dei detenuti del 1983<\/a>\u00a0 (Strasbourg Convention on the Transfer of Prisoners of 1983) or with which bilateral agreements are in force;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; intervene, in particular cases, to support applications for pardon submitted by the person concerned or his legal counsel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Consulate cannot intervene in legal proceedings on behalf of the compatriot and\/or bear legal fees.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For more information on the assistance provided by Embassies and Consulates to compatriots detained abroad and their family members, you can consult the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esteri.it\/mae\/resource\/doc\/2019\/11\/detenuti_italiani_allestero_-_guida_pratica_allassistenza_consolare.pdf\"><strong>Guida Pratica all\u2019Assistenza Consolare<\/strong><\/a> (Practical Guide to Consular Assistance).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"(Reference Office:\u00a0D.G.IT. \u2013 Consular Protection Unit) In the case of arrest in a foreign country, the Italian citizen has the right to request consular assistance.
