On Monday 4 May a conference on \u201cThe EU and its neighbours: charting the way forward\u201d, took place at the Farnesina. The event was organised by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in collaboration with the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the European Union and the Institute for International Affairs (IAI).<\/p>\n
Crisis areas and the challenges they pose<\/strong><\/p>\n Opened by the Under-Secretary of State, Benedetto Della Vedova, the event focused on the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP) in its southern and eastern dimensions. It took place during a period where the ENP itself, which has been sorely tested by the recent challenges in the neighbourhood, such as the crises in Libya, Ukraine and Syria and the migration emergency in the Mediterranean, is undergoing a review process.<\/p>\n Italian support for the European Neighbourhood Policy review process<\/strong><\/p>\n The conference was a high-profile opportunity to reiterate Italy\u2019s support for the review. The process is designed to increase the ENP\u2019s effectiveness and responsiveness to challenges, not least through a greater involvement of the partners to both the east and the south.<\/p>\n Speakers included the President of the IAI, Ferdinando Nelli Feroci, and the Secretary of State of the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andrejs Pildegovi\u010ds, who closed the proceedings along with the Farnesina\u2019s Secretary General, Ambassador Michele Valensise.<\/p>\n The Conference was held just a few weeks away from the Riga Eastern Partnership Summit (21-22 May 2015), which will be one of the crowning events of Latvia\u2019s Presidency of the EU Council.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"On Monday 4 May a conference on \u201cThe EU and its neighbours: charting the way forward\u201d, took place at the Farnesina.
