{"id":108561,"date":"2023-11-27T14:15:00","date_gmt":"2023-11-27T13:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.esteri.it\/sala_stampa\/archivionotizie\/\/2023\/11\/chicago-christine-poggi-racconta-picasso\/"},"modified":"2023-11-27T15:16:09","modified_gmt":"2023-11-27T14:16:09","slug":"chicago-christine-poggi-racconta-picasso","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.esteri.it\/en\/sala_stampa\/archivionotizie\/retediplomatica\/2023\/11\/chicago-christine-poggi-racconta-picasso\/","title":{"rendered":"Chicago, Christine Poggi talks about Picasso"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On the occasion of the exhibition <strong>&#8220;Picasso: Fifty Years Later&#8221;<\/strong>, organized by the <strong>Elmhurst Art Museum<\/strong> 50 years after <strong>Pablo Picasso<\/strong>&#8216;s death, the <strong>Italian Cultural Institute of Chicago<\/strong> is promoting a meeting with Christine Poggi, Director of the <strong>Institute of Fine Arts<\/strong> at <strong>New York University<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The theme of the meeting, scheduled for 2 December at the <strong>Elmhurst Art Museum<\/strong>, is the relationship between Picasso and the <strong>Italian avant-garde<\/strong>. For the occasion, Christine Poggi will present her book <em><strong>In Defiance of Painting: Cubism, Futurism, and the Invention of Collage<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The lecture will start with an account of when artist <strong>Gino Severini<\/strong>, who was living in Paris, encouraged his fellow Italian Futurists to spend a few weeks in the French capital where they would have the opportunity to visit the studios of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. What the Italians saw proved shocking, but also spurred further innovation, leading to subsequent visits to Paris that enabled Futurists to develop their own distinctive goals and techniques.<\/p>\n<p>Christine Poggi will therefore explore the responses of artists <strong>Umberto Boccioni, Carlo Carr\u00e0, Gino Severini<\/strong>, and <strong>Luigi Russolo<\/strong> to Cubism, and <strong>Picasso<\/strong>\u2019s art, in particular. She will also address the early polymaterial experiments of <strong>Giacomo Balla<\/strong>, who, like Picasso, began to employ a diversity of materials in pictorial and sculptural works in the years leading up to World War I.
