Every year this Festival provides a cross section of the Italian cultural scene to the Slovak public.

Tracce Mediterranee brings the Sicilian-born artist to Slovakia for the first time. After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts and working as a set and costume designer, Distefano chose to focus his creative research on painting, making Florence, where he lives and works, his base, but keeping firm artistic references to his homeland.

His experimentation starts from the use of oil painting, stucco painting and acrylics on canvas and canvas board, and then paper, specifically paper patterns for clothing (e.g. Burda). The supports are used in an “improper” way, exploiting the power of pre-printed geometry as a starting point for representing portrait-places, whose common denominator is the Mediterranean and its cultural and social dimensions. The paper patterns are also a reminder of the artist’s childhood, when her grandmother, a seamstress, used them to make clothes. They are steeped in his fondest memories and this is also the reason why, for the past eleven years, they have served as the preferred medium and support for his works, along with canvas.

The exhibition in Žilina will remain open until 14 September 2024.

The Dolce Vitaj Festival is organised by the Italian Cultural Institute in Bratislava, in cooperation with the Italian Embassy in Bratislava and the Italian-Slovak Chamber of Commerce, under the patronage of the Mayor of Bratislava, Matúš Vallo, and the sponsorship of VUB Banka, Brovedani Slovakia, and Generali.

Giorgio Distefano‘s solo exhibition Tracce Mediterranee, organised by the Italian Institute of Culture, will be inaugurated on 16 May 2024, at the Považská galéria umenia v Žiline (Žilina Civic Gallery) in Bratislava.
