From Rome to Khartoum flying the flag of solidarity. The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has received a donation of 950,000 dollars from the Italian Government that will enable the organisation to provide more help to over 20,000 vulnerable people in the Kassala and Red Sea states, in eastern Sudan. \u201cWe are very grateful to the Italian Government for its firm commitment in support of our work in eastern Sudan. It has helped us promote education for the region\u2019s boys and girls, improve literacy levels among vulnerable women and enhance the community\u2019s ability to tackle the difficulties posed by the dry season\u201d, said the WFP\u2019s director in Sudan, Adnan Khan.<\/P>

<\/STRONG><\/P> Education for girls plays a vital role in building peace, stability and development <\/STRONG><\/A><\/P> As the Italian Ambassador in Sudan, Armando Barucco, pointed out during his recent trip to the WFP project in Hamashkorieb, in Kassala State, Italy\u2019s collaboration with the organisation is long-standing. \u201cWe have developed a special partnership, especially in the \u2018Food for Training\u2019 and \u2018Food for Education\u2019 projects. The Italian Government also sets great importance on education for girls, which, as our experience shows, plays a vital role in building peace, stability and development\u201d. Since 2010, Italy has provided donations equating to 8.1 million dollars for the WFP\u2019s work in the region.
