Tajani: Italy in the front line against the death penalty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani welcomed the vote in the UN General Assembly\u2019s Third Committee on the tenth Resolution for a universal moratorium on death penalty. Compared to 2022, the number of countries supporting its adoption &#8211; including Italy &#8211; grew from 125 to 131, striking a new record. Minister Tajani stated: \u201cThis significant result reaffirms the international community&#8217;s strong signal towards progressively moving away from this unjust and inhuman practice, which is a severe violation of the right to life\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">This year Italy led the long and complex negotiations in the General Assembly together with Argentina. The entire diplomatic network, starting with the Permanent Representation to the United Nations in New York, has worked hard to encourage the widest support for the Resolution. Italy and Argentina will continue to work in view of the subsequent vote on the Resolution by the UN General Assembly\u2019s plenary in mid-December.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Minister Tajani said: \u201cThis important outcome is also the result of a close synergy between the Foreign Ministry and the main civil society organisations, including Amnesty International Italy, the Community of\u00a0<i>Sant&#8217;Egidio<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>Nessuno Tocchi Caino\u201d<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">These organisations participated today in the regular meeting of the Task Force on the Death Penalty, chaired by Undersecretary Giorgio Silli. The works of the Task Force were also an opportunity to discuss some of the initiatives of the three NGOs present to support the universal campaign for the abolition of the death penalty, particularly the meeting organised by\u00a0<i>Sant&#8217;Egidio<\/i>\u00a0at the end of November in Rome that will see the participation of many Ministers of Justice from African and Asian countries.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani welcomed the vote in the UN General Assembly\u2019s Third Committee on the tenth Resolution for a universal moratorium on death penalty.
