The exhibition, which will remain open to the public at the Institute\u2019s new premises <strong>until 8 February<\/strong>, is part of the initiatives aimed at strengthening <strong>cultural ties between Italy and Senegal<\/strong>, offering a platform for artists and communities to meet.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition is curated by Eugenio <strong>Viola<\/strong>, <strong>Artistic Director of MAMBO<\/strong> &#8211; Museum of Modern Art in Bogot\u00e1 and one of Italy\u2019s most influential curators internationally, and reflects the theme chosen by the Dakar Biennale:<strong> \u201cThe Wake\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The title <strong>\u201cSouvenir d\u2019Italie\u201d<\/strong> is borrowed from Antonio <strong>Pietrangeli<\/strong>\u2019s 1957 <strong>film<\/strong>, a tourist comedy that played on popular stereotypes to promote Italy. The exhibition seeks to subvert this simplified vision to propose a <strong>critical reflection<\/strong> on what Italy represents today, and how Italian culture is influenced and enriched by stories and visions coming from Africa and its <strong>diasporas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition brings together works by <strong>Binta Diaw<\/strong>, <strong>Adji Dieye<\/strong> and <strong>D\u00e9lio Jasse<\/strong>, three Italian or Italian-resident artists of African origin who explore themes related to <strong>memory<\/strong>, <strong>identity<\/strong>, <strong>migration<\/strong> and <strong>diaspora<\/strong>, highlighting the complexities of a world that is increasingly connected and multicultural, but also marked by new forms of intolerance.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition promotes a message of <strong>openness to dialogue<\/strong> and <strong>coexistence between cultures<\/strong>, highlighting the <strong>role of art<\/strong> as a <strong>tool for building bridges rather than barriers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSouvenir d\u2019Italie \u2013 explained curator Eugenio Viola \u2013 invites us to recognise and celebrate the complexity of migratory and identity-related experiences, past and present.
