It is entirely dedicated to the life and photographs of\u00a0<b>Letizia Battaglia<\/b>\u00a0(1935-2022). Curated by\u00a0<b>Paolo Falcone,<\/b>\u00a0in collaboration with the\u00a0<b>Letizia Battaglia Archive<\/b>\u00a0and the\u00a0<b>Falcone Foundation for the Arts,<\/b>\u00a0and supported by the\u00a0<b>Italian Cultural Institute in London<\/b>, the exhibition is a\u00a0<i>premiere<\/i>\u00a0for the Palermo-born photographer in the British capital and will be open to the public\u00a0<b>until 23 February<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">From the early 1970s,\u00a0<b>Battaglia&#8217;s shots<\/b>\u00a0documented\u00a0<b>everyday life in Sicily<\/b>\u00a0along with the\u00a0<b>horrors of wars and Mafia massacres until the 1990s<\/b>. His photographs are internationally recognised as a fundamental documentation of the\u00a0<b>Mafia phenomenon in Sicily<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">The opening ceremony was attended by the\u00a0<b>Director of the Italian Cultural Institute<\/b>, Francesco\u00a0<b>Bongarr\u00e0<\/b>, the Dir4ector of the Photographers&#8217; Gallery, Shoair\u00a0<b>Mavlian<\/b>, and\u00a0<b>curato<\/b>r Paolo\u00a0<b>Falcone<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u201cIt is extraordinary to see Letizia Battaglia&#8217;s photographs on display in the gallery, which is a stone&#8217;s throw from Oxford Street considered to be the \u2018Mecca\u2019 of the world photographic scene\u201d, said Bongarr\u00e0, also a native of Palermo, who personally met the photographer. He added: \u201cHer lens told the story of a land plagued and offended by the Mafia that found the strength to rebel against the violence and oppression of\u00a0<i>Cosa Nostra<\/i>.
