Southern Italy in the Photography of Fosco Maraini. 1946-1956) in its exhibition spaces. The exhibition is curated by Francesco Paolo <strong>Campione<\/strong>, with scientific coordination by Moira <strong>Luraschi<\/strong> and set design by Marta <strong>Santi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The photographic work of Fosco <strong>Maraini<\/strong>, renowned anthropologist, orientalist, and one of Italy\u2019s leading experts on Japanese culture, returns to the Institute ten years after <strong><em>&#8220;L\u2019incanto delle donne del mare\u201d<\/em><\/strong> (The Enchantment of the Women of the Sea), a reportage dedicated to the pearl divers (<em>ama<\/em>) in the islands of Hekura and Mikuriya off the coast of the Noto Peninsula.<\/p>\n<p>This exhibition, however, reveals <strong>Maraini as a portraitist of Italy,<\/strong> particularly <strong>Southern Italy in the immediate post-war period<\/strong>. The photographs, to use a <strong>neologism<\/strong> coined by Maraini himself, are images \u201c<strong><em>carpite all\u2019empresente<\/em><\/strong>&#8220;\u2014images captured in that <strong>unique moment<\/strong> when the eye is able to perceive the movements of the heart and soul. The <strong>58 works on display<\/strong> in Tokyo are divided into three sections: <strong>\u201c<em>Le nuvole<\/em>\u201d <\/strong>(The Clouds),<strong> \u201c<em>Nostro Sud<\/em>\u201d <\/strong>(Our South), and<strong> \u201c<em>I mosaici di Monreale<\/em>\u201d <\/strong>(The Mosaics of Monreale).<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>exhibition catalogue<\/strong>, published for the occasion by the Institute, includes texts in both Italian and Japanese, featuring a selection of the exhibited photographs, accompanied by an essay by the curator, Francesco Paolo Campione, and an introduction to the three sections.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition, located in the Institute&#8217;s Exhibition Hall, will be open to the public <strong>until May 19.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Italian Cultural Institute of Tokyo is presenting the photographic exhibition \u201cL\u2019immagine dell\u2019empresente.
