Los 2 pa\u00edses tuvieron ocasi\u00f3n de hacer un balance de lo mucho que se ha hecho y de lo mucho que a\u00fan se puede hacer; Italia y M\u00e9xico comparten historia, valores y sensibilidades. \u00bfC\u00f3mo calificar\u00eda usted el estado de las relaciones bilaterales? Y \u00bfCu\u00e1l es el objetivo fundamental de su visita?<\/strong><\/p>\n Italia y M\u00e9xico est\u00e1n vinculados por una antigua, profunda y sincera amistad, arraigada en nuestras comunes ra\u00edces latinas, en un rico intercambio cultural y en la firme voluntad de afrontar juntos los grandes desaf\u00edos de nuestro tiempo. Esta relaci\u00f3n especial ha florecido en numerosos \u00e1mbitos, tambi\u00e9n gracias a un di\u00e1logo constante que en los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os ha cobrado nuevo impulso tras el compromiso de nuestro Gobierno para valorizar las relaciones con toda America Latina. Diez a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s de la \u00faltima visita de un Canciller italiano a su Pa\u00eds, con mi viaje quiero confirmar la seriedad de nuestro compromiso hacia M\u00e9xico como socio estrat\u00e9gico en la regi\u00f3n.<\/p>\n Ser\u00e1 una oportunidad para consolidar los logros alcanzados hasta ahora y para trazar nuevas v\u00edas de colaboraci\u00f3n, en una fase hist\u00f3rica de incertidumbres, donde hay que fortalecer los v\u00ednculos con quien comparte nuestros objetivos y nuestros valores. Es muy importante para Italia estrechar las relaciones con el gobierno de su nuevo Presidente Schinbaum. Por esta raz\u00f3n, adem\u00e1s de reunirme con mi hom\u00f3logo, el Canciller Juan Ram\u00f3n de la Fuente, hoy inaugurar\u00e9 el Foro de Negocios e Inversi\u00f3n M\u00e9xico-Italia junto al Secretario de Econom\u00eda Marcelo Ebrard y tendr\u00e9 reuniones con la Secretar\u00eda de Gobernaci\u00f3n Rosa Icela Rodr\u00edguez y con el Secretario de Seguridad Omar Hamid Garc\u00eda Harfuch. No faltar\u00e1n tampoco un encuentro con la Secretaria de Turismo Joselina Rodr\u00edguez, para discutir nuevas sinergias en un sector de importancia estrat\u00e9gica muy elevada para Italia y M\u00e9xico.<\/p>\n Hoy tendr\u00e1 lugar en la Ciudad de M\u00e9xico un importante Foro de negocios en el que participar\u00e1n muchas firmas y empresarios italianos. \u00bfCu\u00e1l es la importancia de este foro? Y \u00bfCu\u00e1les ser\u00edan, desde su perspectiva, las \u00e1reas de oportunidad para ampliar la cartera de inversiones y tambi\u00e9n el comercio bilateral? <\/strong><\/p>\n M\u00e9xico no es s\u00f3lo un pa\u00eds amigo con el que compartimos profundos lazos hist\u00f3ricos y culturales, sino tambi\u00e9n un socio comercial estrat\u00e9gico de primer nivel. Hoy es el primer pa\u00eds de destino de las exportaciones italianas en Am\u00e9rica Latina, y el segundo en el continente americano. Esta s\u00f3lida relaci\u00f3n se refleja en los resultados concretos: en 2024 el comercio entre Italia y M\u00e9xico alcanz\u00f3 los 8,12 millones de euros (un aumento del +10,1% con respecto al 2023), confirmando el enorme potencial de nuestra colaboraci\u00f3n. Por eso, M\u00e9xico ha sido incluido entre los pa\u00edses prioritarios en el Plan de Acci\u00f3n para la Exportaci\u00f3n Italiana, una estrategia que lanc\u00e9 en Roma el pasado 21 de marzo, enfocada en fortalecer nuestra presencia en los mercados con mayor proyecci\u00f3n fuera de la Uni\u00f3n Europea. Con esta visi\u00f3n, he promovido la organizaci\u00f3n del Foro Empresarial Italia-M\u00e9xico. Este evento re\u00fane a algunas de las mejores empresas italianas en sectores clave como energ\u00eda, infraestructura, agroindustria, turismo, siderurgia, automotriz, aeroespacial, farmac\u00e9utico y biotecnol\u00f3gico. Ser\u00e1 una oportunidad \u00fanica para impulsar nuevas alianzas, intercambiar conocimientos e identificar oportunidades concretas de inversi\u00f3n y cooperaci\u00f3n. La administraci\u00f3n Trump ha provocado una recalibraci\u00f3n de las prioridades de las alianzas en Am\u00e9rica del Norte y en Europa. \u00bfDe qu\u00e9 manera dos socios tan importantes de los Estados Unidos (como lo son Italia y M\u00e9xico) pueden trabajar juntos, coordinar acciones o intercambiar experiencias para enfrentar esta nueva realidad?<\/strong><\/p>\n Italia y M\u00e9xico, como socios y miembros destacados de la comunidad internacional, desempe\u00f1an un papel fundamental en la gobernanza de los cambios que se est\u00e1n produciendo a nivel global. Los desaf\u00edos actuales \u2013 desde la seguridad y el cambio clim\u00e1tico hasta las tensiones econ\u00f3micas y geopol\u00edticas \u2013 exigen una respuesta colectiva. Por eso, es crucial reforzar nuestra colaboraci\u00f3n pol\u00edtica para defender los espacios multilaterales que han sido pilares de paz y estabilidad durante d\u00e9cadas, empezando por las Naciones Unidas.<\/p>\n La nueva postura de los Estados Unidos deber\u00eda aprovecharse como una oportunidad. Junto a M\u00e9xico, creemos que es el momento de impulsar una reforma de las instituciones multilaterales que las haga m\u00e1s \u00e1giles, efectivas y centradas en las verdaderas prioridades globales. Asimismo, debemos insistir en el di\u00e1logo, tambi\u00e9n en el \u00e1mbito econ\u00f3mico y comercial, como herramienta esencial para frenar la escalada de medidas proteccionistas y arancelarias que perjudican al crecimiento y a las cadenas globales de valor.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Ministro, usted M\u00e9xico lo conoce bien, en las distintas funciones que ha desempe\u00f1ado (Comisario europeo y presidente del parlamento europeo) ha sido un actor eficiente para construir v\u00ednculos transatl\u00e1nticos. En estos d\u00edas se ha anunciado el cierre de las negociaciones comerciales para la actualizaci\u00f3n del acuerdo marco con la Uni\u00f3n Europea. \u00bfCu\u00e1l es la perspectiva que tiene sobre ese proceso?<\/strong><\/p>\n La conclusi\u00f3n de las negociaciones para la modernizaci\u00f3n del Acuerdo Global entre la Uni\u00f3n Europea y M\u00e9xico es un resultado muy importante y largamente esperado. Italia ha apoyado su necesidad en Bruselas y espera que pueda firmarse pronto. Tambi\u00e9n aborda cuestiones de impacto global y regional, como la guerra en Ucrania, la crisis en Palestina, el cambio clim\u00e1tico, la transici\u00f3n energ\u00e9tica, la salud global y la transformaci\u00f3n digital. Este enfoque integral nos permite trabajar juntos para construir un futuro m\u00e1s seguro, sostenible y pr\u00f3spero para nuestras naciones y para el mundo.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n Considerando que Italia y M\u00e9xico tradicionalmente comparten visiones convergentes en foros como la ONU y el G20 \u00bfel plano multilateral es relevante en esa conversaci\u00f3n?<\/strong><\/p>\n El \u00e1mbito multilateral es clave en la relaci\u00f3n entre Italia y M\u00e9xico, dos pa\u00edses que comparten una visi\u00f3n com\u00fan de un orden internacional basado en el respeto a las normas, la cooperaci\u00f3n y la responsabilidad compartida. Esta convergencia de principios se refleja de manera clara en foros fundamentales como las Naciones Unidas, donde trabajamos codo a codo para fortalecer un sistema multilateral m\u00e1s justo y eficaz.<\/p>\n Un ejemplo claro de esta colaboraci\u00f3n es el proceso de reforma del Consejo de Seguridad, en el que ambos pa\u00edses forman parte activa del grupo \u201cUniting for Consensus\u201d. Este grupo impulsa una reforma inclusiva, apoyada en un consenso amplio y en la igualdad soberana de los Estados, con el objetivo de mejorar la legitimidad y la efectividad del sistema multilateral.<\/p>\n El G20 es otro foro clave donde Italia y M\u00e9xico unen esfuerzos, buscando soluciones conjuntas a los grandes desaf\u00edos globales, como el cambio clim\u00e1tico, la justicia econ\u00f3mica y la paz internacional.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Hist\u00f3ricamente ha habido cooperaci\u00f3n en temas en los que Italia ha tenido un desarrollo institucional que se ha convertido en un referente, en el combate al crimen organizado o la tutela y custodia de los bienes culturales por citar dos casos relevantes. \u00bfEn qu\u00e9 campos est\u00e1n cooperando o pueden cooperar los dos pa\u00edses para mejorar sus capacidades e intercambiar experiencias?<\/strong><\/p>\n Italia y M\u00e9xico mantienen una fruct\u00edfera cooperaci\u00f3n en los \u00e1mbitos de la seguridad y la justicia. Compartimos modelos y experiencias \u00fatiles en la clasificaci\u00f3n y tratamiento de los presos m\u00e1s peligrosos y en la reinserci\u00f3n social. En este \u00e1mbito nos beneficiamos de la lecci\u00f3n de magistrados heroicos como Paolo Borsellino y Giovanni Falcone, cuyo aniversario 33 de la matanza cae ma\u00f1ana. Adem\u00e1s, Italia y M\u00e9xico llevan muchos a\u00f1os colaborando en la protecci\u00f3n y conservaci\u00f3n del patrimonio cultural. Italia \u2013 a trav\u00e9s del Arma de los Carabineros \u2013 est\u00e1 desempe\u00f1ando un papel crucial en la recuperaci\u00f3n y restituci\u00f3n de m\u00e1s de mil piezas arqueol\u00f3gicas mexicanas que han sido robadas y comercializadas en mercados ilegales.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n En el plano cultural Italia es una potencia y tiene un abanico muy amplio en materia de \u201csoft power\u201d. The two countries had the opportunity to take stock of what has been achieved and what still remains to be done; Italy and Mexico share history, values, and sensibilities. How would you describe the current state of bilateral relations? <\/strong>And what is the primary objective of your visit?<\/strong><\/p>\n Italy and Mexico are bound by an ancient, deep, and sincere friendship, rooted in our shared Latin heritage, a rich cultural exchange, and a firm commitment to jointly address the major challenges of our time. This special relationship has flourished in numerous areas, also thanks to continuous dialogue that in recent years has gained new momentum following our Government\u2019s commitment to strengthening relations across Latin America. Ten years after the last visit of an Italian Foreign Minister to your country, my visit aims to reaffirm the seriousness of our commitment to Mexico as a strategic partner in the region.<\/p>\n It will be an opportunity to consolidate the achievements made so far and to chart new paths for cooperation, at a historic moment of uncertainty, when we need to strengthen ties with those who share our goals and values. It is very important for Italy to strengthen relations with the government of your new President, Mrs. Scheinbaum. What is the importance of this forum? And, in your opinion, what are the areas of opportunity for expanding the investment portfolio and bilateral trade?<\/strong><\/p>\n Mexico is not only a friendly country with which we share deep historical and cultural ties, but also a strategic trading partner of the highest order. Today, it is the leading destination for Italian exports in Latin America and the second largest in the Americas. This solid relationship is reflected in concrete results: in 2024, trade between Italy and Mexico reached 8.12 billion euros (an increase of +10.1% compared to 2023), confirming the enormous potential of our collaboration. For this reason, Mexico has been included among the priority countries in the Italian Export Action Plan, a strategy I launched in Rome on 21 March, focused on strengthening our presence in the markets with the greatest potential outside the European Union. With this vision in mind, I have promoted the organisation of the Italy-Mexico Business Forum. This event brings together some of the best Italian companies in key sectors such as energy, infrastructure, agribusiness, tourism, steel, automotive, aerospace, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology. It will be a unique opportunity to foster new partnerships, exchange knowledge and identify concrete opportunities for investment and cooperation. Italy is firmly committed to Mexico, with a long-term vision based on innovation, sustainability and shared growth.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n There are around two hundred Italian companies investing in Mexico in a wide range of activities, from manufacturing to renewable energy. How does your government assess the treatment of Italian companies, projects and investments in Mexico?<\/strong><\/p>\n Mexico is now a magnet for Italian investment, and the presence of our companies in your country confirms it. Hundreds of Italian companies are actively operating in Mexico, generating value and employment in key sectors such as manufacturing, the automotive industry and fashion, where design and innovation are our hallmarks.<\/p>\n Italy is not only there: it is committed. With all its industrial capacity, talent and vision for the future, Italy wants to be a key partner for Mexico\u2019s growth. Options such as Aerom\u00e9xico\u2019s decision to open commercial flights to Italy are also very helpful, and I hope that the frequency of flights can be verified throughout the year.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n On the economic front, we are witnessing a reconfiguration of the world order as a result of the new political priorities of the United States. The Trump administration has triggered a recalibration of alliance priorities in North America and Europe. How can two such important partners of the United States (such as Italy and Mexico) work together, coordinate actions or exchange experiences to face this new reality?<\/strong><\/p>\n Italy and Mexico, as partners and prominent members of the international community, play a fundamental role in governing the changes taking place at the global level. The current challenges \u2013 from security and climate change to economic and geopolitical tensions \u2013 require a collective response. It is therefore crucial to strengthen our political collaboration to defend the multilateral spaces that have been pillars of peace and stability for decades, starting with the United Nations.<\/p>\n The new stance of the United States should be seized as an opportunity. Together with Mexico, we believe that now is the time to push for a reform of multilateral institutions to make them more agile, effective and focused on the real global priorities. We must also insist on dialogue, including in the economic and trade spheres, as an essential tool for curbing the escalation of protectionist and tariff measures that harm growth and global value chains.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Minister, you know Mexico well, and in the various roles you have held (European Commissioner and President of the European Parliament) you have been an effective player in building transatlantic ties. The conclusion of trade negotiations to update the framework agreement with the European Union has been announced in recent days. What is your view on this process?<\/strong><\/p>\n The conclusion of the negotiations for the modernisation of the Global Agreement between the European Union and Mexico is a very important and long-awaited result. Italy has supported this necessity in Brussels and hopes that it can be signed soon. Once it enters into force, the agreement will generate significant benefits for both parties.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Minister, allow me to turn the conversation to the political arena.<\/strong><\/p>\n How do you assess the dialogue with the Mexican Government at the bilateral level and what are the issues of interest between the two governments?<\/strong><\/p>\n Italy and Mexico share a rich variety of common interests, ranging from political and economic cooperation to the cultural, academic, scientific and technological fields. Italy is more than willing to strengthen and relaunch the bilateral Strategic Partnership \u2013 a framework that since 2012 has been key to deepening ties between our countries in all areas of mutual interest \u2013 with the new Mexican Government.<\/p>\n In recent years, Italy and Mexico have joined forces to tackle global challenges such as transnational organised crime and corruption, opening new doors for cooperation in legal diplomacy, judicial and police cooperation.<\/p>\n The dialogue between our countries is not limited to bilateral issues. It also addresses issues of global and regional impact, such as the war in Ukraine, the crisis in Palestine, climate change, energy transition, global health and digital transformation. This comprehensive approach allows us to work together to build a more secure, sustainable and prosperous future for our nations and for the world.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Considering that Italy and Mexico traditionally share convergent views in forums such as the UN and the G20, is the multilateral level relevant in this conversation?<\/strong><\/p>\n The multilateral arena is key to the relationship between Italy and Mexico, two countries that share a common vision of an international order based on respect for rules, cooperation and shared responsibility. This convergence of principles is clearly reflected in key forums such as the United Nations, where we work side by side to strengthen a more just and effective multilateral system.<\/p>\n A clear example of this collaboration is the Security Council reform process, in which both countries are active members of Uniting for Consensus. This group promotes inclusive reform, based on broad consensus and the sovereign equality of States, with the aim of improving the legitimacy and effectiveness of the multilateral system.<\/p>\n The G20 is another key forum where Italy and Mexico join forces in search of joint solutions to major global challenges such as climate change, economic justice and international peace.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Historically speaking, there has been cooperation on issues where Italy has developed institutional frameworks that have become benchmarks, such as the fight against organised crime and the protection and custody of cultural heritage, to name two important cases. In addition, Italy and Mexico have been collaborating for many years in the protection and preservation of cultural heritage. Italy, through the Carabinieri, is playing a crucial role in the recovery and restitution of more than a thousand Mexican archaeological artefacts that have been stolen and sold on illegal markets.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n On a cultural level, Italy is a powerhouse and has a very wide range of soft power. Italian brands, design, fashion and cultural industries have enormous influence. Furthermore, Italy will be the guest of honour at the Guadalajara International Book Fair. What impact does culture have on improving or deepening relations between the two countries?<\/strong><\/p>\n Italy is synonymous with culture, creativity and innovation. Globally recognised for its artistic, literary and creative heritage, Italy has turned its cultural legacy into a strategic tool for projecting itself onto the world stage. Made in Italy is much more than a label: it is a symbol of excellence, quality and originality that is universally admired, especially in Mexico.<\/p>\n Being the guest of honour at the 2026 Guadalajara International Book Fair not only reflects a deep love for Italian culture and literature, but it also recognises the excellence of Italian know-how, which is admired throughout the world. In Guadalajara, Italy will present an exceptional cultural programme that will offer a comprehensive overview of our creativity in all its forms. The world of books and publishing will be just one of the highlights, accompanied by concerts, exhibitions, film screenings, theatre, and events related to design and gastronomy, which will open up a range of unique experiences for Mexicans.<\/p>\n In addition, as part of our cultural agenda, I have launched a new and exciting initiative: the Italofonia conference, that will be held next autumn.
