Vice\u00a0Minister\u00a0of\u00a0Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation,\u00a0Emanuela\u00a0Del Re, spoke at “Codeway\u00a0– Cooperation and Development Expo”, a virtual event\u00a0created and\u00a0organised by\u00a0Fiera\u00a0Roma\u00a0on the issue of\u00a0development cooperation at the time of the pandemic.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“The pandemic continues to profoundly\u00a0impact not\u00a0just\u00a0health but the economy and well-being of billions of people\u00a0around the world. For\u00a0the first time in twenty years\u00a0the crisis triggered by the pandemic has led to an increase in the number of people\u00a0who have fallen into extreme\u00a0poverty – +71 million compared to the beginning of 2020 – and a further increase in the number of people exposed to food insecurity”.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

An “unprecedented multi-dimensional crisis”\u00a0which, according to\u00a0the\u00a0Vice\u00a0Minister,\u00a0“has exposed the vulnerabilities of our development models”. “First\u00a0of all, we must defeat the virus with the tools science\u00a0provides for us. The\u00a0recent\u00a0vaccine\u00a0announcements\u00a0are the result of an acceleration\u00a0in science and\u00a0research\u00a0that is unparalleled in recent history\u00a0of mankind, thanks to a\u00a0hitherto unmatched\u00a0international collaboration”.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

We will then need “innovative tools to finance recovery and development,\u00a0striking an overall balance between fiscal, economic and social policies” and encouraging collaboration between “governments, individuals and civil society organisations”. “Italy –\u00a0she\u00a0emphasised – has promoted concrete initiatives\u00a0in all sectors:\u00a0besides\u00a0health\u00a0care, we have also\u00a0taken steps to ensure food security and\u00a0keep the\u00a0food chains\u00a0going”.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“Italy has taken a leading role in the international health response,\u00a0first and foremost\u00a0through our Development Cooperation\u00a0tools. We have proactively and effectively committed ourselves, in\u00a0the\u00a0G7 and G20 forums and at the United Nations, to building a great international alliance, which has become part of the ACT Accelerator – Access to COVID-19 Tools”.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
