Keynote speaker Giorgio Novello, the Italian Ambassador to Norway and Iceland, pointed out Italy\u2019s strong links with the Arctic, which recently led to our obtaining Permanent Observer status in the Arctic Council. <\/P><br \/>\n<P><STRONG>The Italian presence in the Arctic region<\/STRONG><\/P><br \/>\n<P>Ambassador Novello also recalled Italy\u2019s presence in the region, most notably in the scientific sector (with the research base in the Svalbard Islands and a strong presence of Italian lecturers and researchers in the region\u2019s universities) and the economic sector. In the latter case, major Italian companies are engaged in the oil and gas, construction, high-tech, and helicopter industries, while our small and medium-sized enterprises are increasingly engaged in the components segment. The Ambassador also sketched out Italy\u2019s vision for the Arctic, in the context of our government\u2019s growing interest in the region.<\/P><br \/>\n<P><STRONG>Meetings with key Norwegian figures and with the Italian community in Norway<\/STRONG><\/P><br \/>\n<P>During his stay in Troms\u00f8, Ambassador Novello \u2013 with the help of the Deputy Head of Mission, Tommaso Andria \u2013 had a number of fruitful meetings with, most notably, Ministers Aspaker, H\u00f8ie e Sveinsson; the Rector of Troms\u00f8 University; members of the Italian scientific community in the city; the Mayor of Stavanger; representatives of Oslo\u2019s Fridtjof Nansen Institute; Troms\u00f8\u2019s scientific and economic institutions; representatives of Italian companies operating in the region; and Italian participants at the Arctic Frontiers event.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>Discussions focused on future initiatives to strengthen and build upon the Italian presence in the Norwegian and Icelandic Arctic region. <\/P><br \/>\n<P>Other speakers at the Arctic Frontiers event include the Norwegian Prime Minister, Erna Solberg; the Icelandic Foreign Minister, Bragi Sveinsson; the Finnish Foreign Minister, Erkki Tuomioja; and the Prime Minister of Greenland, Aleqa Hammond.<\/P><br \/>\n<P><STRONG>Italian contracts in the region<\/STRONG><\/P>The \u201cscience\u201d sessions of Arctic Frontiers included a presentation by AgustaWestland, which recently won the contract to supply SAR helicopters to the Norwegian government.
