{"id":17020,"date":"2013-05-15T14:42:02","date_gmt":"2013-05-15T12:42:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.esteri.it\/sala_stampa\/archivionotizie\/comunicati\/2013\/05\/20130515_bonino_in_parlamento_rilancio_italia-2\/"},"modified":"2013-05-15T14:42:02","modified_gmt":"2013-05-15T12:42:02","slug":"20130515_bonino_in_parlamento_rilancio_italia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.esteri.it\/en\/sala_stampa\/archivionotizie\/approfondimenti\/2013\/05\/20130515_bonino_in_parlamento_rilancio_italia\/","title":{"rendered":"Bonino in Parliament &#8211; Foreign Ministry to contribute to Italy\u2019s rebound"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><P>Promotion of the country\u2019s productive system, strengthening of the European Union, the Middle East peace process, the Syrian crisis, Libya and the solution to the case of the marines held in India were some of the foreign ministry\u2019s main planning concerns outlined by Minister Emma Bonino in her report before the Upper and Lower Houses of Parliament. <\/P><br \/>\n<P><STRONG>Growth diplomacy to sustain exports<\/STRONG><\/P><br \/>\n<P>The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the minister explained, intends \u201cto contribute to the economic recovery and consolidation\u201d of the country, which is the government\u2019s top \u201cpriority\u201d, and to do so, first and foremost, through the \u201cinternationalization of small and medium-sized enterprises\u201d, a mission that will be shared with the Ministries of Economic Development and of Foreign Trade. Within a vision of \u201cdiplomacy for growth\u201d, the minister added, \u201cwe are obliged to sustain the trend in our foreign exports\u201d, which \u201crose by 3.5% in 2012\u201d.\u00a0 <\/P><br \/>\n<P><STRONG>Goal: a United States of Europe<\/STRONG><\/P><br \/>\n<P>Also linked to economic growth is the European question. \u201cA Europe solely founded on austerity is not possible\u201d because the EU \u201cmust be and do something more\u201d, the minister underscored, specifying that \u201cnot everyone has understood what the political costs could be\u201d of a Europe such as we have today. The government\u2019s goal \u201cremains a United States of Europe\u201d and a \u201csystem that ensures greater results and savings too, in the sectors of defence, research, major infrastructures and, obviously, foreign policy\u201d. \u201cI believe\u201d, she added, \u201cthat the Italian EU presidency in the second half of 2014 will be a major opportunity for injecting new impetus\u201d. Moreover, the transatlantic partnership can be an instrument for \u201cmaking further advances\u201d, especially as regards \u201ctrade and investments\u201d. <\/P><br \/>\n<P><STRONG>Syria: Bonino in Amman on 22 May<\/STRONG><\/P><br \/>\n<P>Moving on to the Syrian crisis, the minister announced that she would be in Amman on 22 May to attend the meeting of the Friends of Syria, whose participants are to include \u201cthe United States and Russia\u201d. The following day the Syrian opposition will be meeting in Istanbul to decide whether to participate in Geneva 2. This \u201cgives me hope that there is another possibility\u201d for a \u201cSyrian tragedy with 80,000 dead\u201d, Bonino added. <\/P><br \/>\n<P><STRONG>Middle East: last chance for peace<\/STRONG><\/P><br \/>\n<P>In terms of the Middle East, there is a \u201clast possible chance\u201d for Israeli-Palestinian peace that should lead rather than to \u201ctwo peoples, two States\u201d, to \u201ctwo peoples, two democracies\u201d, the minister asserted, expressing her confidence in the efforts and commitment of U.S. diplomacy. <\/P><br \/>\n<P><STRONG>Libya: contributing to avoiding chaos<\/STRONG><\/P><br \/>\n<P>As for Libya, \u201cItaly must work with other countries on an initiative that avoids the situation\u2019s deteriorating into chaos\u201d. \u201cThe law on isolation that will decimate a portion of the political class\u201d, and lead Tripoli into a \u201ccomplicated situation, did not help\u201d, Bonino commented. <\/P><br \/>\n<P><STRONG>Marines: dialogue and firmness to bring them home<\/STRONG><\/P><br \/>\n<P>In the case of the marines held in India, we must \u201cfind a way to bring them home, and I believe that dialogue and firmness can lead us to a just solution\u201d, the minister stated, expressing her hopes for a \u201cfair and rapid\u201d trial. \u201cWe will not shrink\u201d, she assured, \u201cfrom stating our belief in international law\u201d.
