\u201cA new era in relations between Italy and Vilnius has opened today\u201d. These were the words of Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi, speaking today in Vilnius, where he met the Head of State, Dalia Grybauskait\u00e9, and the Lithuanian Foreign Minister, Linas Linkevicius. And where an agreement concerning diplomatic missions was signed. <\/P>

Diplomatic mission in Rome<\/STRONG><\/STRONG><\/P> The agreement will give Lithuania a prestigious diplomatic mission in Palazzo Blumenstihl, in one of Rome\u2019s finest neighbourhoods. Minister Terzi pointed out that he had personally been involved in seeking an agreed and mutually satisfactory solution to a problem that had been dragging on for years. <\/P> During his visit, Terzi was awarded the \u201cStar of Lithuanian Diplomacy\u201d Medal of Honour in recognition of his efforts to resolve the \u201cVilla Lithuania\u201d question. <\/P> Trade between Italy and Lithuania growing in spite of the crisis<\/STRONG><\/STRONG><\/P> The visit was an opportunity to reiterate Italy\u2019s support for Lithuania\u2019s term in the revolving EU Presidency in the second half of 2013. He also underscored Italy\u2019s interest in further strengthening political and economic relations. In recent years Italian-Lithuanian trade has grown, in spite of the economic crisis, to over 1 billion euros. And the fact that commerce has grown in \u201csectors of excellence\u201d such as machinery, energy, textiles and agri-food is a promising sign for the future. <\/P> Ample room was given to European issues in Terzi\u2019s discussion with his Lithuanian colleague, with the focus on the economy. Over the next 18 months Italy and Lithuania will both be holding the Presidency of the European Union. For this reason, commented Terzi, it will be necessary as of now to work diligently on issues of fundamental importance to the future of Europe, such as strengthening European governance, banking union and developing the Single Market. <\/P> Terzi also discussed in some detail the European Union\u2019s relations with its partners to the east of its borders.
