The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, held a bilateral meeting with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, during his visit to Ukraine to attend the commemoration of the Bucha massacre and the Foreign Affairs Council.<\/p>\n
Minister Tajani reaffirmed at the outset Italy\u2019s steadfast support for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine, as well as for ensuring accountability for those responsible for the atrocities committed in Bucha and other cities over the four years of conflict. He expressed satisfaction with the progress made towards the establishment of a Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression within the framework of the Council of Europe, and with the extension\u2014decided today by the UN Human Rights Council with Italy\u2019s support\u2014of the mandate of the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Ukraine.<\/p>\n
The Minister recalled Italy\u2019s support for US-led negotiation efforts, for robust security guarantees, and for strengthening the resilience of Ukraine\u2019s energy sector, including through the latest EUR 100 million aid package, which adds to the boilers and generators already supplied. The Minister also reaffirmed Italy\u2019s determination to maintain pressure on Russia, advocating for the adoption of a new EU sanctions package and for the implementation of the EUR 90 billion loan agreed at the European Council in December.<\/p>\n
Tajani and Zelensky also discussed the crisis in the Middle East and contacts with Gulf countries affected by Iranian attacks. The Minister reiterated Italy\u2019s commitment to ensuring that the conflict in Iran and its economic repercussions do not divert attention from the war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n
