Tajani noted that the current tensions in the Gulf and the uncertainty surrounding the truce between Iran and the United States, must not divert the international community’s attention from the civil war in Sudan. Efforts to bring the fighting to an end must be stepped up and all countries in the region must play their part.

The Berlin Conference follows on from meetings held in Paris (2024) and London (2025) and will bring together representatives of the United Nations, regional and international organisations, Sudanese civil society, NGOs and major donors. Its objective is to strengthen the response to the ongoing crisis and to support a pathway towards lasting peace and a transition led by civilian authorities.

Tajani recalled that the conflict in Sudan continues to have severe humanitarian consequences, with widespread violence against civilians, large-scale displacement and an increasing impact across the region. Nearly two-thirds of the population require humanitarian assistance, while access constraints persist and available funding is declining.

In this context, the Italian Government launched the “Italy for Sudan” initiative at the end of 2025. The project, promoted by the Minister, represents a further step in Italy’s humanitarian commitment in support of the Sudanese population, through an integrated approach involving the Italy System, major humanitarian organisations and civil society.

A first air shipment of humanitarian aid was delivered on 25 December to 2,500 students attending schools for children from displaced families, managed by the Parish of Port Sudan. Over the Easter weekend, a second tranche of aid, including essential food supplies, was distributed. The operation is expected to be completed by the end of April, with further deliveries of essential items — including family tents, waterproof tarpaulins, mosquito nets, mattresses, water containers and tanks, kitchen sets and hygiene kits — for a total of approximately 107 tonnes of aid, intended for 4,245 displaced families across 31 camps in Red Sea State.

Also within the framework of “Italy for Sudan”, in March Italy allocated EUR 5 million to FAO to support emergency agricultural assistance and livestock-based livelihoods and EUR 1 million to FICROSS to ensure access to safe drinking water and to provide shelter and medical assistance to communities most affected by the conflict in Darfur.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani will participate on 15 April in Berlin in the Third International Conference on Sudan, organised by Germany together with the European Union, France, the United Kingdom, the United States and the African Union.
