The initiative involves, in particular, the network of 54 Italian schools abroad, which are at the forefront of numerous outreach activities on the themes of marine environmental protection and the sustainable use of its resources.<\/p>\n<p>The sea is playing an increasingly central role in the Ministry\u2019s work, including in the implementation of the objectives of the Sea Plan adopted by the Government in 2023. This context includes the proclamation of Italy\u2019s Exclusive Economic Zone in the northern and central-southern Adriatic, the Ionian Sea and the central-southern Tyrrhenian Sea. The national EEZ opens up significant opportunities in the sectors of exploration and sustainable management of natural resources, scientific research and the development of offshore renewable energy.<\/p>\n<p>Under the leadership of Minister Antonio Tajani, the Ministry is also committed to safeguarding the security of maritime routes and defending freedom of navigation, including through support for initiatives promoted within the G7 and the European Union in key strategic regions, including the Strait of Hormuz. In this context, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs promotes the diversification of trade routes, supporting the development of new strategic corridors such as the Indo-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), and assists Italian companies active in the protection of critical underwater infrastructure and port security. Italy\u2019s maritime vocation is also reflected in its active participation in the European Union\u2019s naval missions \u2013 Aspides, Atalanta and Irini \u2013 all currently led by our country, confirming Italy\u2019s leading role in the security of the wider Mediterranean.<\/p>\n<p>At the multilateral level, the MAECI participates in negotiations and international forums dedicated to ocean governance, including the Agreement on Marine Biodiversity in Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) and the International Seabed Authority. The Ministry also supports the WestMED Initiative for the sustainable development of the blue economy in the western Mediterranean, promoting cooperation projects in priority countries such as Mozambique, Libya and Tunisia, aimed at the sustainable management of marine resources, the protection of ecosystems and the creation of inclusive economic opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, as part of its cultural and scientific promotion activities, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has organised the digital exhibition \u2018Siamo mare. We are sea\u2019 and the exhibition \u2018Mediterranea.
