Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani is in Beirut for a series of official meetings with the President of the Lebanese Republic, Joseph Aoun, and with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants, Youssef Rajji. During his visit, the Minister will also meet the Italian contingent deployed in the country as part of the Italian Bilateral Military Mission in Lebanon (MIBIL) and the Military Technical Committee for Lebanon (MTC4L). He will also hold a video conference with the Italian contingent stationed at the UNIFIL base in Shamaa, a symbol of Italy\u2019s ongoing commitment to supporting peace and stability in the Middle East.<\/p>\n
The mission takes place against a backdrop of deep regional instability and aims to reaffirm Italy\u2019s full support for Lebanon\u2019s stability and security.<\/p>\n
During talks with President Aoun and Minister Rajji, Minister Tajani will first and foremost emphasise the desire to promote direct dialogue between Lebanon and Israel to build lasting peace in the region.<\/p>\n
Italy\u2019s commitment to the security and defence sector is also central to the visit. Our country participates in the main international initiatives in support of Lebanon, starting with the UNIFIL mission, and is also engaged on a bilateral basis through the MIBIL mission, to which the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has allocated approximately \u20ac10 million over the last three years to strengthen the logistical and infrastructural capabilities of the Lebanese Armed Forces. Italy also chairs the Military Technical Committee for Lebanon (MTC4L), a strategic instrument for coordination with the Lebanese authorities in the defence sector.<\/p>\n
During the meetings, the Italian contribution in response to the humanitarian crisis in the country will be discussed, also through an emergency aid package worth \u20ac10 million and the organisation of a humanitarian flight carrying over 40 tonnes of essential supplies.<\/p>\n
Minister Tajani will also emphasise the desire to achieve a truce in the conflict between the United States and Iran and to ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, not least to put an end to uncertainty in the energy and supply sectors.<\/p>\n
