The Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Maria Tripodi, attended yesterday evening \u2014 on behalf of Minister Tajani \u2014 the opening session of the Aqaba Process ministerial meeting in Athens. The discussions focused on countering terrorism and organised crime in the Balkans.<\/p>\n
Tripodi reaffirmed the strong support of the Italian Government for the initiative, describing it as \u201ca unique platform for dialogue and cooperation on issues of crucial importance for international security\u201d. She also underscored Italy\u2019s leading role in combating criminal networks in the Balkan region: at bilateral level, through the \u201cFalcone-Borsellino\u201d legal diplomacy programme and the network of security experts in Italian Embassies, supporting local authorities; and at multilateral level, through the European EU4FAST programme, aimed at strengthening the investigative capacities of countries in the region, as well as the I-CAN initiative, promoted jointly with INTERPOL to counter transnational organised crime.<\/p>\n
The Aqaba Process is an informal high-level discussion forum, launched in 2015 and chaired by King Abdullah II of Jordan. It aims to strengthen international coordination and facilitate the exchange of expertise and information, using a regional approach. The meeting in Athens follows the Rome summit of 15 October, focused on West Africa and co-chaired by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and King Abdullah II.<\/p>\n
