Following their telephone conversation on April 22, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani held further talks this evening with Abbas Araghchi, Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran, on recent developments in the Middle East.<\/p>\n
During the conversation, Minister Tajani expressed the Italian Government\u2019s grave concern over the rising tensions in the region, emphasising the need to avoid any further escalation. In such a context, he reaffirmed the urgency of working towards a ceasefire agreement with the United States and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, not least to avert negative consequences for food security and stability in Africa. Those were issues that Minister Tajani had also raised during a telephone conversation with Secretary of State Rubio on April 24.<\/p>\n
The Minister recalled that the development of a nuclear programme for military purposes by Iran is a red line for Italy, as it is likely to trigger a dangerous nuclear arms race across the entire Middle East region, with severe consequences for international security.<\/p>\n
During the conversation, the priority of achieving a lasting ceasefire in Lebanon was reaffirmed. Iran needs to use its influence over Hezbollah to ensure it immediately ceases further attacks against Israel and contributes to the achievement of a stable and shared peace.<\/p>\n
Minister Tajani finally reaffirmed Italy\u2019s commitment to supporting and proactively contributing to the international community\u2019s efforts for peace, security and stability in the Middle East, whilst keeping diplomatic channels open with all partners in the region.<\/p>\n
